I get to replace this hose...
Quiet ly minding my own business...slashing the planet with the tractor. And I’m suddenly and effectively lubricated by a spray of engine coolant.
This bottom hose split and sent coolant spraying towards the fan which then spread it all over me and the tractor.
Now I have to get my hands in there to get the old one out and the new one back in.
I predict a few choice expletives will grace our paddocks...

Sometimes I wonder about engineers who route hoses and cables through strange places. I get that there’s probably some reason behind it, but like... can’t we cable/hose manage in such a manner so that both the guys getting a paycheck to fix the thing at a repair shop and the guy at home trying to fix it themselves get an easy, clean job?

Well lookitdat, enough space for a lemur’s
hands. First step after draining the coolant should be to sawzall that
hose into oblivion.

As an engineer(one who writes software, not one who builds cars, but still relevant) if you make everything easy to do, you’ve now made nothing easy to do because everything is now just a mess in a spot that used to be clean and organized . Also at some point you need to do what’s good and not what’s best to meet deadlines and ship anything at all ever.

I am confident that if it was me doing that job, a portion of my skin would remain on those fan blades (at least until the next time the engine was started).

I totally get trying to make everything easy to do from a software perspective. I don’t know how many times I’ve gone to rewrite some major function only to realize “... well, this is actually even worse than before” and revert to what I had before.
It’s oftentimes a lot easier to make something a bit dirty, but at least it works.

I’m yet to locate the radiator drain plug and, even if it has one , on a 60 year old English made tractor , removing it might make things much worse...

In that case I was actually talking more about UI than clean code, if it does a lot of things something’s gotta end up in the sub-sub menu and be a bit of a pain to get to, because if everything was just right there nothing would be easy to find.
But your point is very relevant to this also.

Your confidence mirrors my own.
I suspect t here’s a reason that this hose and the top hose are in the sort of condition that they are...
Especially when the replacement 7 piece coolant hose kit for the tractor is just AU$25.

Probably doesn’t, my 30-year-old Land Rover hasn’t got one, you just need to yank the lower rad hose and hope for the best

That is my plan.
My previous experience with radiator drain plugs was on a 1981 Series 3 Stage 1. First the drain plug collar came out with the plug. Then the bottom hose spigot came out with the bottom hose.
If there is a repeat of this... you'll hear me from there.

Ouch, that’s no fun.
Although, I came up with a little trick to avoid any of that. I just stick one of those little siphon-pump things down the top of the radiator(the one in my Rover is a straight shot down the fill hole, next to the fins) and siphon most of the coolant out that way so it doesn’t make a mess

Oh I thought you meant “easy to do” from an implementation perspective. Writing everything in the most locally expedient way is a fast path to creating a tangled ball of mud that’s nearly impossible for anyone else to understand or improve.

Can confirm, currently trying to understand and improve a tangled ball of mud. Instead of untangling said mud I’m distracted on Oppo.
